Public Advisor – Saskatchewan Public Regulatory Advisory Network (SPRAN)

Overview

The Saskatchewan Public Regulatory Advisory Network (SPRAN) is a project spearheaded by participating members of the Network of Interprofessional Regulatory Organizations (NIRO), also referred to as the “College Partners. It exists to bring public insight into regulatory conversations that inform health care in Saskatchewan.

SPRAN (Saskatchewan Public Regulatory Advisory Network) is looking for new Public Advisors to help shape the future of health regulation in our province.

Through SPRAN, members of the public will work with health regulators to discuss real issues that affect patient care, safety and public trust in regulated health professionals in Saskatchewan. We provide a structured, respectful space for dialogue and collaboration.

We are especially seeking participants from underrepresented communities, including Indigenous Peoples, LGBTQ+ individuals, newcomers to Canada, seniors, rural residents and people living with disabilities.

Together, we can ensure Saskatchewan’s health regulations reflect the voices and experiences of all its people.

College Partners

The College Partners involved in SPRAN are some of the regulatory bodies responsible for overseeing licensed health professions in Saskatchewan. The College Partners ensure that SPRAN is integrated into regulatory decision-making processes and that public input is meaningfully considered and communicated back to their organizations.

Public Advisors

SPRAN Public Advisors are Saskatchewan residents aged 18 and older, who bring lived experience and the public voice into health regulation – whether as patients, caregivers or community members. They reflect the voices of Saskatchewan residents and contribute insight to help inform the future of health regulation and make it more inclusive, equitable and responsive.

Duties and responsibilities

As a Public Advisors you would:

  • Attend advisor meetings, focus groups or participate in survey-based engagements, and contribute thoughtfully and respectfully.
  • Review and provide feedback on regulatory materials including but not limited to draft policies, guidelines, public-facing communications with a focus on clarity, relevance, impact and public interest.
  • Participate in orientation and training sessions, including those related to equity, cultural safety and trauma-informed practices.
  • Share personal experiences and reflections that can broaden regulatory understanding and support better public outcomes.
  • Uphold confidentiality, following SPRAN’s Code of Conduct, and creating a welcoming and safe space for all participants.

Eligibility and composition

Public Advisors are Saskatchewan residents aged 18 and older who bring lived experiences, preferably with regulated health professionals, whether as patients, caregivers, advocates and community members. The network aims to ensure that public input into regulation reflects the diversity of Saskatchewan’s population.

SPRAN prioritizes inclusion and welcomes perspectives from Saskatchewan people whose voices are often unheard.

To maintain objectivity and avoid real or perceived conflicts of interest, Public Advisors:

  • Should not be employed by a Saskatchewan health regulatory body, the Saskatchewan Health Authority and/or be a health professional.
  • Should not serve on any governing Council of a Saskatchewan health regulatory body.
  • Should not be licensed as a regulated professional, whether in health or another profession.
  • Should not be employed by government or any organization in a role that directly influences the regulatory work of SPRAN College Partners.
