We are the country’s foremost provider of services to the regulatory sector and have developed a suite of digital products to support professional regulators fulfill and advance their public interest mandate. One of these is The Registrar magazine.

The Registrar is Canada’s leading digital publication dedicated to professional regulation and licensing. Since 2021, it has published 14 editions and reaches more than 20,000 readers in Canada and around the world. The magazine publishes in-depth reporting on the work of regulatory bodies, analysis of emerging trends and best practices, expert commentary from thought leaders, and feature articles that highlight the human side of regulation through personal narratives and case studies.

We are now positioning The Registrar magazine to become the preeminent international journal of regulation, and a hub where practitioners, researchers, academics, and policymakers can share news, ideas, editorials, and timely perspectives that reflect the changing nature of professional regulation.

We are seeking a freelance Managing Editor to lead the editorial development of The Registrar. This is a non-employment, part-time opportunity ideal for a communications professional or journalist with regulatory experience and a curiosity for ideas, policy, and systems change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the production of each issue from planning to publication
  • Identify and pitch stories aligned with the magazine’s themes and readership
  • Coordinate, schedule, and conduct interviews with leaders in regulation and governance
  • Write and edit articles, features, and columns to a high editorial standard
  • Maintain the editorial calendar and ensure all deadlines are met
  • Collaborate with designers, contributors, and editorial advisors to ensure quality and cohesion
  • Maintain timely and professional communication with contributors and interview subjects
  • Support the continued development of editorial policies, tone, and voice
  • Monitor sector trends and global developments to inform future content planning

Qualifications and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in journalism, editing, or content production, ideally in a regulatory, professional, or public sector context
  • Superior writing, editing, and interviewing skills
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with a track record of meeting deadlines
  • Professionalism and discretion in working with high-profile individuals and institutions
  • Knowledge of Canada’s regulatory and licensing landscape is essential; familiarity with regulation in other jurisdictions is a strong asset
  • Comfort with digital publishing platforms and layout workflows
