ABOUT THE ROLE
Are you a strategic communicator who thrives on making complex messages clear and engaging? CMTO is looking for a Communications & Media Relations Specialist to lead media relations, internal communications, and external messaging that connects with registrants and Ontarians.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As Communications & Media Relations Specialist under the direction of the Manager, Policy & Communications, you will:
- Develop and maintain relationships with journalists, editors, and media outlets to promote positive coverage of CMTO’s initiatives and regulatory role;
- Monitor media coverage, draft press releases, and manage media relations;
- Prepare daily media briefs summarizing key news stories, trends, and potential risks or opportunities for CMTO;
- Write and edit clear, audience-friendly content across platforms;
- Monitor and respond to emerging issues or crises, ensuring timely and accurate communication with stakeholders;
- Lead the development and implementation of crisis communication plans to address potential reputational risks;
- Collaborate with the Digital Communications Specialist to develop engaging communications (e.g., e-blasts, newsletters) for CMTO’s stakeholders; and
- Plan, execute, and manage events to support CMTO’s initiatives, including venue booking, audio-visual setup, catering, scheduling, and overseeing post-event activities (participant surveys, etc.).
You will bring:
- Experience in communications, public relations, or journalism;
- Strong writing, editing, and media relations skills;
- Ability to convey complex ideas clearly and succinctly in both verbal and written communication using simple language;
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines; and
- A keen eye for detail and commitment to accuracy.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum five years of experience in communications, media relations, or a similar field, with experience in internal and external communications;
- Professional experience with social media, metrics to measure success/impact of communications, business writing and editing;
- University degree in Communications, Marketing or Journalism, or College diploma in Online Communications, Content Management, Communications or Marketing, or a related field; and
- Fluency in French is preferred.
RELEVANT TECHNICAL SKILLS
- Email marketing platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Constant Contact) for e-blasts and newsletters;
- Social media platforms (e.g. X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.) and social media tools (e.g. Hootsuite, Buffer);
- Updating and maintaining websites (e.g. Word Press, basic HTML editing);
- Graphic design tools (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite); and
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.).
