About the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO)
The College of Veterinarians of Ontario regulates the delivery of veterinary medicine in Ontario. All veterinarians who practice in Ontario must be licensed by the College. In serving the public interest, the College seeks to understand the risks involved in the practice of veterinary medicine and collaborates with partners to develop solutions which reduce the potential for harm to animals and people.

The College:
• Issues licences to qualified individuals.
• Sets standards to improve the quality and safety of veterinary care.
• Inspects and accredits veterinary facilities to assure a safe, professional environment.
• Investigates and resolves concerns about a veterinarian and their practice.
• Administers quality practice programs to promote ongoing improvement and growth.
The College licenses more than 5,000 veterinarians and accredits over 2,300 veterinary facilities in Ontario. The role and authority of the College is set out in the Veterinarians Act and regulations made under this legislation.

Working with CVO
This role is a remote, part-time role, suitable for an independent professional seeking self-employment (independent contractor).

About this Unique Opportunity
As the regulatory body of the province’s Veterinary profession, the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (the College) has a statutory responsibility to consider all complaints received concerning a veterinarian’s practise or behavior.

The Mediated Resolutions Program (MRP) is an alternative to the formal complaints process. MRP allows the complainant and the veterinarian (the parties) to work together to create solutions that satisfy everyone involved. The MRP is entirely confidential.
The goal of the MRP is to resolve complaints in a manner that protects the public interest while giving all parties the opportunity to participate actively. This approach focuses on quality improvement and education.
The purpose of this role is to act as mediator for complaint matters identified by the Investigations and Resolutions team as suitable for the MRP. The mediator is a neutral person who works with the parties in a respectful and confidential way to assist them in reaching a resolution that is mutually agreeable.

Primary Responsibilities
The following is a list of the essential duties and responsibilities of this job.
• Contact the parties to schedule mediations either via videoconference or by telephone (rarely in-person).
• Facilitate discussions between the parties to reach a resolution.
• Apply dispute resolution techniques to guide the mediation process.
• Prepare and submit reports for successful and unsuccessful mediations.
• Communicate with case managers about availability, work within established timeframes.
• Provide feedback and trends about mediations.
• Maintain confidentiality throughout the mediation process.

What you Bring to the Role
• Diploma or bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent work experience.
• Demonstrated formal training in early resolution and/ or dispute resolution.
• Experience facilitating resolution of disputes between parties.
• Knowledge of, or experience working in a regulatory environment is an asset.
• Working knowledge of MS Office Suite, Adobe, and virtual meeting platforms.
